Teaching and Facilitating

Teaching carries a baggage of negative connotations like not being person-centered and/or process-orientated.

Rethinking Teaching:

  • The teaching person instructs only as much as necessary.
  • The participants are provided the application of knowledge early on.
  • The teacher takes over a consulting function.

Facilitate refers to the Latin term "facilis", which can be translated with "easy (to do):"

  • The facilitator can be understood as a "consulting teacher," who is not authoritarian.
  • His or her tasks include any measures to facilitate the learning-process.

From the perspective of musical learning, Community Musicians strive to work within flexible facilitation modes and are committed to multiple learning relationships and processes. They aim for excellence in both the processes and products of music making, and these are commonly relative to the individual goals of the participants.
